Despite maintenance works, traffic on the Koper-Divača line continues to increase
Although the Divača-Koper branch line has, for some time, been undergoing extensive maintenance work, freight services continue to be smooth enough not to compromise cargos passing through the Port of Koper. Luka Koper 's cargo throughput is constantly increasing, and so is railfreight. Excellent co-operation between the Freight Transport Section of Slovenske Železnice (Slovenia's national railway operator) and employees of Luka Koper's Internal Logistics Service, ensures the uninterrupted flow of goods.
Total cargo throughput over the first three months of 2008 amounted to 4,072,293 tonnes, which is in accordance with the company's plans. There was a considerable increase in the volume of quality cargos, in particular cars (up by 46%) and containers (up 19%). Due to these significantly higher volumes, more wagons and train compositions were necessary. Between January and March 2008, the Koper rail terminal dispatched 163 more trains than in the same period last year, and accepted 35 more. The total number of trains in the first trimester of 2007 amounted to 3,942, whilst this year it totalled 4,140, which is a year-on increase of 5 percent. The number wagons loaded and unloaded at Koper recorded a year-on increase of 8 percent (up from 50,291 in 2007 to 54,371 in 2008).
Jože Orel, the Koper-based manager of Slovenske Železnice's Freight Transport Section stated that "Considering the circumstances, such good results could only have been achieved by exemplary co-operation between Luka Koper, the forwarding agents and our own Freight Transport Section. The improvement of business relations within the Koper sub-system has been ongoing and has facilitated an increase in the total amount of freight being carried by Slovenske Železnice."
Roman Božič, the manager of Luka Koper's Internal Logistics Service, added "The creation of an ever-increasing number of full compositions for various categories of goods within the port area is the result of excellent co-operation. And because there are no stopovers at the loading station, this accordingly improves dispatch efficiency."
Considering the heavy traffic on the Koper-Divača line, five percent additional growth is quite an achievement. A short-term solution is the line's modernisation, which was begun by Slovenske Železnice this year, and will ultimately provide a 30 percent increase in capacity. A long-term solution is the construction of a second line, which should, according to the Ministry of Transport, be completed by 2015.
