LUKA KOPER, d.d., Koper

Encouraging maritime throughput in the first quarter

In March 2009 the traffic reached 1,148,214 tonnes, while in the period January - March the total cargo traffic reached 3,712,353, which is 1% ahead the planned quantity and 9% down compared to the same period in 2008.

As in accordance with the global trend the greatest downfall was registered on cars handling. In the first three months we handled 62,333 units, which is 62% less compared to the same period last year. However we should stress the we managed to get several new businesses in this period although most of other Mediterranean ports registered even greater traffic drop.

As a consequence of the crisis in the automotive and steel industry a downfall of general cargos has also been registered, however timber and perishables are keeping the figures relatively stable with a growth of respectively 9 and 7 %.

The container traffic performed well, with a first qurter resulting in 85,867 handled TEUs which is 3% ahead compared to 2008 and 7% ahead the planned throughput.

The relatively good results are consequence of the Port of Koper's geographic location which enables lower costs, but also quality of services and reliability are comparative advantages. Another factor determining the successfulness of Luka Koper is its multi-purpose ability, when a drop in a cargo segment can be compensated with other cargos.
