LUKA KOPER, d.d., Koper

Note on the situation of the railway connections with the Port of Koper

We herein provide the interested public the overview of the situation and crisis measures being implemented by Luka Koper in relation to the consequences of the natural disaster that has affected a large part of Slovenia.

With regard to rail connections with its hinterland, the Port has been cut off since the evening of Thursday 30th January. Thus between Friday and Wednesday we have been unable to load/unload  4,100 wagons, i.e. some 175,000 tonnes of cargo. The situation in the field is changing day-by-day and according to the information provided by the national railway operator Slovenske Železnice we can expect to begin moving all blocked train compositions at the end of this week.

Monday saw the creation of a Luka Koper crisis committee, which works 24 hrs/day and is in constant contact with key clients and the national railway operator in order to co-ordinate priorities. In addition, communication with our clients has also been stepped up in order to provide them with key information. On Tuesday 4th February 2014, the General Director of Slovenske Železnice Dušan Mes and Luka Koper's Management Board President Gašpar Gašpar Mišič met in Koper; they remain  in daily contact with each other in order to co-ordinate operational challenges. According to the representatives of Slovenske Železnice, the Borovnica to Pivka section - where freezing rain brought down power lines - has been affected the most. The most badly damaged section of line shall only facilitate diesel trains because the re-establishment of power lines will require several months.

Despite all odds, Slovenske Železnice managed to establish the connection to Luka Koper via Nova Gorica line which can only serve four to five trains per day. According to the national railways operator, the line Koper – Ljubljana will be re-established at latest tomorrow and it will also be operated by diesel locomotives.

Thus far Luka Koper hasn't incurred any business damage due to the natural disaster; no cargo was redirected to other ports. Through the measures listed above and the priorities which are co-ordinated with our business clients we will ensure the delivery of cargo and thereby meet the requirements of the production plants on our key markets.
