LUKA KOPER, d.d., Koper
Successful discussions with the Hungarians - Common logistics centre
On 5th March, President of the Luka Koper Management Board, Mr Robert Časar, participated in a Slovenian trade delegation to Hungary, headed by Minister Andrej Vizjak. As a bridge between Central and Eastern Europe, Hungary is of particular interest to Slovenia, and further to this, it is one of the company's most important markets; indeed, a record 1.1 million tonnes of Hungarian cargo passed through Luka Koper last year.
Equally, Luka Koper is a crucially important port for the Hungarian economy; therefore the idea of closer ties - including the possibility of capital connections - has been present for quite some time. This trade mission proved an actual step forward in this direction. In conjunction with the multinational Trade Trans Invest and the Hungarian rail terminal operator MAV Kombi Terminal, the President of the Luka Koper Management Board has signed a letter of intent to establish a new container terminal at Curtici, which lies at an important railway junction on the main line between Hungary and Romania. Curtici is a mere 17 kilometres from the city of Arad, which is itself one of the most important business and commercial centres in Central Western Romania.
Upon this occasion, the President of Luka Koper Management Board, Mr Rober Časar, commented: »Such joint venture investment projects are of a great interest to us, because they strengthen the position of Luka Koper in the local market. This move is also congruent with a development strategy that anticipates the extension and expansion of Luka Koper operations both near and far. Curtici also lies on a transport corridor connecting Central Europe with the Black Sea, and this terminal is anticipated to grow into a significant European logistics centre.«
